Bartlett Road
Bartlett Road was the principal cross street of Riverhurst, the riverside colony west of Concord Road in South Billerica, from 1921 until its pieces were renamed about 1990. It first appears on the "Plan of Riverhurst, Billerica, Mass.," drawn in January 1921 by Whitman and Howard, civil engineers of Boston (Plan Book 38, Plan 85). On that plan Bartlett Road runs west from Riverhurst Road near the main road, south of and parallel to it, to the foot of Keneson Road, and continues west in two arms: a shorter one past lots 104 to 106 to the foot of Spring Lane, and a longer one along the southern edge of the tract to Roosevelt Road and Ossamequin Road at the southwest corner.
The road was named for the owners who had the plan made. In March 1915 the 40 acres that became Riverhurst, the riverside part of the old Bacon and Roby farm, which Rolland A. and Frances W. Hobbs had run as a resort with a boat house, ball field and leased camp sites, passed from the Hobbs estate through Nathan H. Daniels to Fred B., A. Mabel and Claude B. Bartlett of Bedford, "subject to leases" and with the lane to the highway. The Bartletts' subdivision of 1921 named its main side road for the family.
Bartlett Road was never accepted as a public way. It appears with Ossamequin Road among the town's drainage projects of 1972 and in highway lists of the 1970s. The name duplicated a much older Bartlett Road in North Billerica (listed in 1919 as running "from High (N B) n Sheldon northerly"), and the town's program of 1988 to 1990 for renaming streets with "the same street names or similar sounding names" was the likely occasion of its disappearance. The registry index uses "Bartlett Rd" for the Riverhurst lots until December 1991 and "Morgan Rd" from November 1992, and at least one lot of the 1921 plan is indexed under both names. The long southern arm is now Morgan Road, which meets Ossamequin Road, and the short arm toward Spring Lane is now part of Keneson Road. No vote or order making the change has been found.
